Interoperability and the Need for Standards

For XR to thrive, interoperability between devices, platforms, and data systems is crucial. However, XR technologies currently suffer from a lack of standardisation, which limits their potential and raises questions about user experience and data security.

How important is interoperability to the future success of XR technologies, and what should be done to create effective standards? Are there particular areas where you feel the need for technical or legal standardisation is most urgent?

Companies, developers, and stakeholders should work together through consortiums to develop open, accessible standards. Organizations like ISO, IEEE, and W3C should be involved to formalize and promote these standards globally. For example, to deliver solutions globally we meet ISO standards that help us to be recognized and trusted. So, formal recognitions help to build trusted communities and develop healthy relationships. Also, standardization could help create software ecosystems in the future. As an example, VR training solutions connected with the HR department’s automation software help to process employees swiftly and sync the data to focus on essential operations.

VR training is an interesting example to give here, because I think it might be a very good example of an area where standardization could be most quickly visible and value creative. Training is one of the largest markets for VR. Standards that would make it easier for solution providers to serve diverse clients would improve the rate of adoption. Recognized ethical standards for VR training that could be communicated to worker groups would likely also improve the openess to adopt VR training options.
